Fun Approaches of Digital Transformation

Digital transformation is a buzzword for organizations across various market domains. After a conversation with a director from a healthcare provider’s digital center, I was inspired to write this short and fun blog.

There are tons of information about digital transformation strategies, types, pillars, etc. You can simply google to find these information, or use chatGPT if you want to feel cool.

However, I found little information on approaches for organizations to embark on digital transformation, so I want to use fun analogies to explore and discuss some possible approaches.

“Migration”

This approach involves a comprehensive transformation of a specific area or even entire organization. Generally, it requires significant investment in technology and resources. However, it can deliver results quickly and help the organization achieve its digital transformation goals in a short amount of time.

It like our moving experience from one house to another, you need to have the 2nd house ready, and move all you need from the original one.

Even it sounds expensive, this approach happens often with many organizations. Thinking of how your company changing its email system, payroll system, HR system, or some other areas, you will get a feeling.

“Evaluation”

This approach involves a gradual and phased implementation of digital technologies and processes. It allows the organization to make small, incremental changes over time and adjust its approach based on feedback and results. This approach generally take longer to achieve the desired outcomes.

I think of this approach as an evaluation style. You may not feel significant for each “small” step, but finally, it get transformed.

“Transformer”

These 3rd approach is kind of between the “migration” and “evaluation”, so I want to represent it as “transformer” way.

Just as a transformer changes from a robot to a car in a process of steps, organizations can take steps to upgrade parts of their systems for digital transformation without disrupting the existing systems. This allows for a gradual transformation of the whole system over time, but each step is a “migration” style.

The different is that transformers can do transformation back and forth, but digital transformation is one direction only, always goes forward.

Conclusions

Overall, the approach that an organization chooses depends on its specific needs, objectives, and resources. Some time, you may need to take a hybrid approach — some areas migrate, some areas change incrementally.

Regardless of what approach to take, digital transformation requires clear vision and strategies, strong leadership, and commitment to innovations.
